Lindsay & Travis’ Four Month Road Trip – Archives

2009 Road Trip Map

In 2009 Travis and I both found ourselves unemployed. After spending a few weeks/months weighing the options and looking for jobs, we decided the most adventurous solution to our stir-crazy boredom was to pack up everything we owned into storage or the back of Travis’s Accord Coupe and drive around the country “for a month and a half or so.” This short agenda turned into a 4 month cross country road trip spanning 37 states and 4 Canadian provinces.

We kept a photo blog of our adventures, which I have archived here in chronological order.  Since I have since changed the formatting of my site, some of the image layouts are a bit off.  I plan to go back through them and correct the formatting.

Now without further ado…

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to the new website+blog for our (my fiance Travis and I) possible upcoming journey.  While our journey is still not 100% happening, we are starting to more seriously plan for it rather than sit around staring at our PCs all day (although there is plenty of that too).

So here’s the rundown on what’s going on:

Travis and I are both unemployed; myself since I graduated last summer, and Travis only more recently.
The job market sucks right now.  California is expensive.

So with that said, we have several options:
1) Sit at home and apply to jobs (like we have been for the past few months); pay rent, do nothing.
2) Move somewhere with cheaper rent in CA, then continue with step 1).
3) Move out of state somewhere with cheaper rent/cost of living/income taxes/etc; then continue step 1).
OR
4) Put all our stuff in storage, and use our rent money to drive around the country (while continuing to apply for jobs and such as we go).

Needless to say, we’re leaning towards option 4).  I personally don’t think it’s realistic we’ll live cheaply enough to survive gas/rooms/camping/etc off of only our rent money, but for only a little bit more we can go out and explore the US, get some life experience, and see how well we function together trapped in a small vehicle for hours on end.  Not to mention this is likely to be one of the last times that both of are unemployed at the same time and don’t have strings tying us down to a particular location.

And so, we’ve started to prepare for our journey; we put in our 30 days notice at our current apartment, we’ve started “cleaning” (barely), and I’ve been hard at work trying to determine what I can bring for car entertainment which doesn’t take up lots of space.  Already Travis says I’m bringing too much stuff whenever I talk about what I need to occupy myself in the car.  On the bright side, since we have no real schedule or destinations, we don’t really have a need to spend long periods of time in the car anyday, since the main purpose of our trip is just to get out of Orange County and explore the rest of the US.

However, despite the freedom our trip should allow, I see a couple inhibiting factors already.  We plan to continue to apply to jobs during our trip, so we have a need for fairly reliable internet access.  Also, Travis wants to continue to trade stocks, which means we need the internet to be working for 1-2 hours at around stock market open and close, which means we do have to plan our travel times and stops somewhat around need of internet.  Oh well.

All and all, it should be an interesting journey, even if we don’t see much of the US it’s still a change of pace and different from the norm.  I really hope it happens!

PODS

Today, Travis called the PODS (Portable On Demand Storage) people and arranged for our very own storage pod to be delivered on March 26th — that’s only a little more than 3 weeks away, and I haven’t even started doing anything resembling packing!  Plus, it’s going to be harder to clean up and pack because I actually have work for the next few weeks (go figure).  At least I’ll have some extra pocket money before the trip.

Other than that, I like work because it allows for some good photo ops on the way home.

So the POD arrived today, we can finally start moving things out of our apartment. I guess I need to start packing soon, haha.

I’m getting really excited for leaving soon — even though I know there’s a ton of things to do in the next week. I have to clean-up + pack, probably purchase a few necessities for the trip, go to work for a few more hours (solely to fill out my timesheet and get my favorite Diedrich coffee cup if nothing else), and finish getting excited and ready to travel. I also need to prep my laptop for the trip (need to install all my photo editing programs).

Other than that — still not much to report; we are in the preparation stage, but we’re at the slightly more stressful point where the past few weeks of procrastination is really going to kick us in the butt this weekend. Oh well ~ such is life.

I’ve spent my last few weeks in Orange County before the trip trying to take pictures on the way too and from work, particularly when there are sunsets with clouds (clouds make the sunsets infinitely cooler). So here are a few favorites from recently:

Packing

sucks.

Officially Homeless

Or just living out of a car, I suppose.

So the last few days have been pretty hectic for Travis and I, mostly because we procrastinated packing until the last possible moment. Here’s what we’ve been up to since the POD arrived…

Thursday, March 26th – POD arrives, 8am. Moved the few boxes we had packed downstairs. Created a rule “whenever you leave the house, you must carry something downstairs.”

Friday, March 27th – Packed up more random things, decided to have a “House Cooling” gathering on Saturday for the few friends we have (lol). Packed a few more boxes, cleaned up a little bit (not really).

Saturday, March 28th – Made 8lbs of tri-tip and lots of twice-baked potatoes. Tried to make guests bring boxes/furniture downstairs; mostly unsuccessful.

Sunday, March 29th – Became much more nervous/worried about our Tuesday morning POD-pickup deadline. Packed *most of* the kitchen + bedroom; tried to organize things into piles of “bring on road trip” “pack into POD” and “trash.”

Monday, March 30th – Had some friends come over to take the fridge + help move the heavy furniture downstairs. Finally started breaking down computers in the office (they were the primary way we procrastinated packing). Dragged the BBQ downstairs, put a “FREE” sign on it — left it on the street. It was gone 30 minutes later.

I was a little antsy about meeting Tuesday morning packing deadlines (I had thought all day the POD-people were coming at 8am Tuesday), but then Travis told me they were coming between 11am-3pm, which was a lot better, since it would give us more daylight to move stuff downstairs instead of tripping down the stairs at 1am.

Tuesday, March 31st – Wake up at 7am; pack hardcore. POD pick-up comes at 11:30; we’re actually ready (surprisingly), but only barely. We were still packing when they called to give us a 25 minute warning. We watch all our stuff go off into storage (*cry*), but we aren’t done yet :(

Good-bye stuff!

Good-bye stuff!

Now we have to clean the apartment :( :(

We were cleaning from when the POD was picked up at 11:30am until 6:00pm! I was so sick of cleaning, and very ready to leave.  Finally, we finished cleaning at 6, split up to do a few errands, had some In’n'Out, and went to DISNEYLAND!

We were only there a few hours, but it was a nice way to see off some friends and spend our last night in Orange County.

Chinese Food

Travis’ cookie:

My cookie:

We decided these contradicted; however, in order to test out the potential riches of my fortune cookie, we decided to see what luck it brought us in the form of a $1 scratchcard. However, it didn’t really work out that well.

I guess we’ll have to take a page from the magic 8-ball’s book and “try again later.”

Bakersfield = Excitement.

Travis’ friend Bryan met up with us and after doing nothing for most of the morning, we decided to hit up the nickel arcade. Of course, most of the games cost 5 or 10 nickels, but I don’t really like the shooting arcade games anyway, so I played mostly the random games where you get tickets.

I found a fun 10 cent game called Buzzy Buzzy where you use a little net to scoop bumblebee striped balls into a little jar of honey. It was surprisingly amusing for the 10 cents it cost, so we spent a couple dollars trying to see who could get the highest score.

Travis and Bryan’s high score was 22, but mine was only 19 :( I got 300 tickets though, so we got a hackie sack so the boys could go be silly in the parking lot, and I got a pink cat.

We decided the pink cat would have to be one of those things where I take pictures of it along my travels, so I decided to start in the parking lot of the arcade in front of some random person’s car, who happened to have a cow hanging off the bottom off their car.

Yea, I don’t know either.

Essense of Bakersfield

I decided at some point that my only real goal in terms of photography is to take one cool shot that I really like in each place I stay for a prolonged period of time. This was somewhat of an issue for Bakersfield though, because everything here is just kinda dry with lots of oil rigs and dead stuff.

The picture I liked the most was a panorama of a railroad bridge while standing in a “river” just before sunset (the river was dry). It’s stitched together from 13 vertically-oriented shots. I had some fun fooling around with this image, because I liked the high-contrast desaturated look, whereas Travis wanted me to try for a post-apocalyptic look (which I’m not sure I got).

#3 – Original (very little post-production)

I’m not sure which one I prefer (either #1 or #3 for me), but so far I think this image is the most interesting of my Bakersfield bunch.

Couple extra shots that turned out okay:

Napa is a nice change from Bakersfield.

No doubt about it, it is infinitely prettier in Napa than it was staring in Bakersfield. We had fun yesterday wandering around the vineyards and a nearby lake. The vineyards themselves aren’t super exciting because all the plants are very small still, but there were a lot of nice wildflowers and other scenery.

I need to take pictures of sheep, but we saw a bunch yesterday and couldn’t find any today on the ride back to Sacramento. It’s okay though, because Travis and I are heading back there tonight for 2 more nights of camping.

As far as the wine tasting goes, there are a ton of wineries in Napa, but I gotta say I prefer the experience in Paso Robles more. Napa has just as many vineyards, but they are all more expensive; like in Paso you can usually taste for free, or if they charge you it’s because you get to keep your wine glass (and it’s only $5-10 anyway). Napa most places seemed to be $10-20, with no free glasses. It was also generally more crowded (although I guess it was a Saturday).

It was still fun though. We went to Sutter Home first right before lunch, which is a brand I recognize from the grocery stores. They gave Leila and I their sweeter wines, which I thought tasted mostly the same (and like juice). I guess I’m not a big fan of white zinfandel, white cabernet sauvignon, and white merlot. I wasn’t even aware that all those wines came in “white” form (I had only heard of white zinfandel prior). I guess it has to do with grape skins in the fermentation process or something. The guy explained it to another group there, but I couldn’t hear very well.

After that we found a vineyard that did Saturday BBQs, so we all got some tasty sandwiches and ribs. I guess they did free wine tasting there, but we didn’t try any because it was ridiculously crowded inside and out. They did have an awesome display of cheese though. I didn’t get any of that either.

After that we found a lake, found some wineries, went to the grocery store… It was pretty fun overall; got better later in the day once the people seemed to stop charging us for tasting fees if we were nice to them.

Some pictures from vineyards, driving, hiking and lake. :)
